Why him? Why her?
|
When we see two people who are deeply in love with each other, we often think to ourselves that it makes sense because they have so much in common with one another; either they share the same interests, or else they go to school together, etc. In other words, we think we can explain love between two people by such and such a link or give specific reasons: I love him because he is good looking, What I love about her is her sense of humour, or He has got such a good heart, or We fit together so well...
However, these apparent explanations do not explain anything; after all there are many other people who have a good heart, who are funny, attractive, etc.
The truth is that there is something about love that is a mystery. We cannot really explain it, nor can we force or predict it. The heart has its reasons which reason cannot understand. (Pascal) True love comes from the deepest part of our being.
True love involves human qualities (humour, looks, etc.) but as it grows and deepens it surpasses the faults and limitations which are always present in us. The ability to go beyond simple lust is a good test of the depth of a relationship, which should involve the whole personality.
So why him? Why her? The only real explanation is Because it’s him, because it’s her.
